South Africa was described by Nelson Mandela as the 'Rainbow Nation' and this does not only apply to the people but also to the numerous varied sights, sounds and smells which provide an African holiday experience. If it is your first trip to South Africa, then book with an African travel specialist to get the most of your experience.

Why go to South Africa?

Is South Africa safe?

The decision to go to Africa is a big one and some people may have put off a trip to South Africa due to news reports of violence. However, this tends to affect only certain sections of the big cities and if you are travelling with a certified travel agent, you will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the pleasures of South Africa.

Wildlife and safaris

One of the main reasons why people travel to South Africa is to experience the wildlife, most often on a safari holiday. The most famous game reserve in South Africa is the Kruger National Park, a massive area of natural bush where the animals live in peace. Here, you will see the Big 5 which are lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino in addition to many more animals, both large and small. African safaris are once in a lifetime experiences and something you will never forget.

What else to see and do

World's most famous table, wine, caves and a luxury train

There's much more in South Africa than lions and elephants. Among the many treasures in this beautiful country is the Table Mountain in Cape Town and the Garden Route which takes you through some of South Africa's best wine country. The Blue Train is the South African equivalent of the Europe's Orient Express which travels between Pretoria and Cape Town in five-star luxury and the Cango caves, which is Africa's largest cave complex, and has formations called the Cleopatra's Needle and Leaning Tower of Pisa.

History and traditions

South Africa has a history going back to over thousands of years. From

pre-historic times, to the San people of the Karoo desert, from the Zulu and Xhosa tribes to the modern and multi-cultural South Africa, there are many cultural and historical sights which will help you to learn more about the country and its history. The most famous South African of all time may be the former president Nelson Mandela. You can visit sites related to his life and imprisonment. You can also learn more about the traditions and beliefs such as the 'sangomas' or traditional mystics and healers which have helped to shape South Africa.

South Africa is one of the most popular safari spots in Africa. The best known safari destination is the Kruger National Park, but there are safari tours available across the country with prices to suit most budgets from luxury safari deals to more basic safari trips.

Where to go

Kruger National Park

The area of Kruger has been inhabited since pre-historic times and was always a good hunting ground. At one time, the area was an important part of the southern African trading routes. The park is named after the former South African president, Paul Kruger (1825-1904). It was under his administration that hunting was banned in the area and the national reserve was created. It was first opened to tourists in 1927.

There are a variety of accommodation choices in the Kruger National Park from tents to luxury safari lodges. The safari tour operators can provide packages for everyone from families to honeymoon couples. Whichever of the Kruger safaris you choose, you'll almost certainly see the Big Five which is lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino plus a huge variety of other animals such as zebra, giraffe and different antelopes.

Shamwari Game Reserve

This is a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape Province and is part of the famous Cape Garden Route. The area is famous as part of the pioneer history that saw the settling of South Africa by Europeans. The game reserve has won several awards and has the Big Five plus a selection of other animals to view. The accommodation is in one of seven lodges ranging from the more basic to five-star luxury spa lodges. The 25,000 hectare park has five different eco-systems within its boundaries, ensuring that the visitor can see the best of the Cape Provinces flora and fauna.

When to go

The best time to go on a safari holiday is during the South African winter from May to September when the bush is less thick, and therefore, the animals are easier to see. Most of the tour operators offer a choice of packages and areas, and all provide family-friendly tours. Imagine your child's face when he or she sees an elephant or lion in flesh for the first time.

Precautions

Some of the game reserves are in malaria areas, so check with your tour operator whether you need to take precautions. Remember that the animals are wild, so listen to the guide and do not get out of the vehicles for any reason, unless the guide says that it is safe to do so.

Last word

A safari in South Africa is a once in a lifetime adventure for all the family.
